Suicide by God

As a nation we are forcing God to pull the trigger on us.
Suicide by God

God is slow to anger, but . . .

I like cop shows.  Always have.  I liked Dragnet.  The original one.  And Highway Patrol with Broderick Crawford.  I like mysteries and crime dramas and all that “law and order” type stuff.

I don’t know when I first heard the term “suicide by cop”, but I instantly understood the concept.  I’m not sure I fully understand the mentality behind the desire to die in this manner.  Maybe no one really does.  But it is not hard to understand that someone who may fear the act (i.e. the sin) of suicide might seek a way to provoke someone else to kill them.

“Suicide by cop” is not in the same category as “physician assisted suicide” made infamous by Dr. Jack Kevorkian.  But I suspect many of the same mental processes are at work.  For example, someone is suffering from a very debilitating disease.  They have been informed that there is virtually no hope of recovery.  Death will be very slow, very painful, very ugly.  So, why not end it all now?  Or so the logic goes.  (And, by the way, if there is no God, this conclusion is perfectly logical and reasonable.)

“Suicide by cop” is fundamentally different from physician assisted suicide because the person who wants to die forces the hand of law enforcement against them.  Law enforcement officers are committed to “serve and protect” their communities.  They work to preserve life, not end it, unless absolutely necessary.  And that necessity usually comes only in those thankfully rare occasions when a person is threatening the lives of others.  It is in that situation that a police officer must use deadly force to avoid having other people killed by the perpetrator.  And the perpetrator intentionally behaves in such a manner as to leave the LEO no other option but to shoot to kill.  That is the plan: to force an otherwise unwilling police officer to do what he must do, and what he has been trained to do, even though he does not desire to do it.

According to one website, we read the following definition:

Suicide-by-cop: A colloquial term used to describe a suicidal incident whereby the suicidal subject engages in a consciously, life-threatening behavior to the degree that it compels a police officer to respond with deadly force.1

Suicide by God is similar.  I’ve never heard anyone use this term before, so maybe it is original with me.  But the concept should be very informative.  The God who is love, whose mercies are from everlasting to everlasting, who does not delight in the death of the wicked--even so, this God hates sin with vehement anger.  There are multitudes of biblical passages that describe God’s displeasure and utter disgust with sin.  He has shown His willingness to deal with the reprehensible evil of sin in numerous ways.  For instance, the destruction of the world by water.  And we also read in Scripture of the future re-destruction of the world by fire.

In other words, God is quite serious about His distaste for our sin.  The ultimate display of His loathing of our sinfulness is at the cross of Christ.  Only through the crucifixion and sacrifice of His own Son, and only through the shedding of the blood of the very Son of God, can sin be eliminated, justice be satisfied, and the wrath of God be ameliorated.

When a nation whose foundations were based in a popular understanding of the Bible as the revelation of God to men, and the people of that nation generally understood sin was greatly displeasing to God, and they almost universally understood that continuing in sin personally and corporately would eventually bring the displeasure of God--when that same nation determines, by the institution of specific laws, to ignore what God has said and violate God’s Law for the sake of the self-centered desires of sinful men, this is the equivalent of committing national suicide--by God.

America is provoking the God who does not delight in the death of the wicked, to kill the wicked.  What other choice does a holy God have?

Like one who seeks to commit “suicide by cop”, America is forcing the hand of God against her.  It is reminiscent of what Jesus said prior to His own, shall we say, “suicide by the Pharisees and Pilate”, when He addressed the city and said:
"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those sent to her!  How often I wanted to gather your children together, just as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not have it!‬ (Luke 13:34 NASB)

Would Jesus not be willing to say the same to us today?  But we will not have it.  America will not have that Man to rule over her.  It would violate our God-given, inalienable rights to freedom and liberty.  And sin.  Surely God would not force us to submit against our wills to the King of Glory, would He?  Surely God respects our free will to choose to do and be whatever we feel would be in keeping with our God-given right of the pursuit of happiness!

We are committing suicide as a nation by provoking a patient, longsuffering, holy God to act in anger and wrath against a people who vehemently reject the rule of a Sovereign King, the Lord Jesus.  We will perish in our sins if we do not bow the knee to Christ, quickly.

And I do not speak of the Christ of men’s imaginations.  The one who is 100% benevolent and kind, who loves everyone in their sinfulness and wickedness and abominable lifestyles “just the way they are”.  That is the fictitious Jesus of liberal and unbiblical theology that is so remarkably palatable to sinners and so utterly nauseous to God.
